Man City head to Anfield under cloud of financial rules verdict

Man City head to Anfield under cloud of financial rules verdict

The Premier League resumes this weekend with one of its flagship fixtures, but Manchester City's trip to Liverpool will unfold amid a hostile atmosphere and beneath an unprecedented cloud following the club's guilty verdict in a landmark financial case.City head to Anfield on Sunday for their first league game ‌since an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 serious breaches of the league's financial rules over nine years, as well as charges relating to their failure to co-operate with the investigation.City have appealed the decision and continue to maintain their innocence, saying the commission's opinion contains "clear material errors" and that they possess evidence supporting their position. For now, however, the legal battle and the football season occupy the same uneasy space.City have carried on imperiously on the pitch, winning all five of their league matches to start the campaign, and will arrive at Anfield looking to preserve that perfect record."The feeling is fantastic, to be honest," Maresca told City's in-house media on Thursday."The players are excited for the next two games (they host Paris St Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday), but especially they are excited because in this moment, we are top of the league, so the players they are just focused on that."They know that what we can control is the football side. They know they are professionals. They know that the noise is there, but they don't care too much about the noise. They are just focused on this moment, how we can beat Liverpool, how we can, together with the fans, try to win at Anfield."Liverpool, meanwhile, have endured a less convincing opening, with two wins and three draws from their opening five league games. That would normally provide more than enough intrigue for a fixture between two clubs that have shaped much of the top flight's recent history, but events away from the pitch have transformed Sunday's game into something far bigger."If they want an understanding of how angry the game is going to be, then Anfield will tell them like you would never believe," former Manchester United captain and England defender Gary Neville declared recently on The Overlap podcast."I suspect there may be banners, there will ‌certainly be chanting. There will be a reception like you have never seen for them at Anfield... it will be a brutal day."SANCTIONS YET TO BE DETERMINEDEvery City appearance now comes with questions over what ultimately awaits the club, with the appeal process still to run and sanctions yet to be determined. The uncertainty has already prompted discussion over possible compensation claims from opposing teams and players and the broader consequences for English football.Anfield is hardly the gentlest place for City to return to domestic action after the international break. The rivalry between the clubs already carried plenty of edge after years of battles near the top of English football. Now Sunday's encounter will provide the first indication of how City's players handle the scrutiny generated by a verdict that reaches far beyond the usual rhythms of a title race. There is plenty at stake for sixth-placed Liverpool, too. Victory would provide an emphatic lift after their modest start and land the first blow on a City team who have so far been flawless.Defending champions Arsenal, who trail City by three points in second, kick off the weekend at home to Leeds United on Saturday.Mikel Arteta's side know victory would lift them provisionally level on points with Enzo Maresca's City. Leeds have provided one of the season's early surprises, sitting fifth after going unbeaten through five games.Another heavyweight fixture follows later on Saturday when Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur, with both struggling sides desperate to inject some momentum into their seasons.United are 12th with just one victory, while Spurs are bottom with just two points. The meeting adds another layer of intrigue to a weekend already dominated by events at Anfield, with two traditional powers under pressure to turn around difficult starts when they meet at Old Trafford.Yet inevitably most eyes will be fixed on Anfield. After an unusually long pause in domestic football, the Premier League returns with its most contentious off-field controversy far from resolved.-Reuters

Faster than F1: The extreme motorsport where women keep winning

Faster than F1: The extreme motorsport where women keep winning

Like "being shot out of a cannon" is the closest comparison that driver Susanne Callin can come up with for the extreme motorsport she competes in.She is a two-time European champion in Top Fuel drag racing - often described as the fastest sport on the planet.Races begin with a bone-shaking roar, as the world's fastest-accelerating cars leave the starting line, flames bursting out of their exhaust pipes. The cars surge to more than 300mph (483km/h) in races that last just four seconds, with drivers experiencing more g-force than an astronaut launching into space. It is the only elite class of motorsport where women frequently beat men to major titles.Women have won seven out of the past nine European Championships, while, until recently, female US driver Brittany Force held the world speed record in the sport. In comparison, it is 50 years since a woman even competed in a Formula 1 Grand Prix race.Women account for about 10% of participants across motorsport, and just 4% of elite drivers, according to campaign group More Than Equal. However, they made up 20% of the drivers competing in this year's US and European Top Fuel seasons. So why is this high-velocity motorsport bucking the trend?More Than Equal has described drag racing as "the most gender-equal motorsport in the world". Top Fuel is its most extreme form, named in reference to the powerful nitromethane fuel the cars run on.Races take place on a straight track, just 1,000 feet (305 metres) long. Usually, two cars race each other. The intense g-force hits in the first second of the race, as the cars go from stationary to 100mph, with a second gut punch following as the clutch fully engages about half-way through. It can look terrifying. The adrenalin rush is "extremely addictive", Swedish driver Callin, aged 43, tells BBC Global Women. Concern over the risks "is always there" she says, but "the safety really does work". Drivers are highly protected and safety precautions have been boosted further after fatal crashes in nitromethane-fuelled cars in 2004 and 2008, with races reduced in length.Even just watching from the stands is a visceral experience, with vibrations shaking your body and the ground. Spectators are advised to wear ear defenders - the noise is comparable in decibels to standing next to a fighter jet taking off.The highest official speed ever reached in a Top Fuel drag race is over 346mph, compared to 231mph in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Brakes alone cannot slow the cars fast enough, so parachutes are deployed from the car's rear at the finish. The abrupt halt is "like someone kicking you in the chest", says Callin. "You lose your breath."Top Fuel drivers need lightning-fast reactions and the physical endurance to withstand the intense forces. Precision driving skills are crucial as constant tiny adjustments are needed to keep the car on track."It has to be instant reactions with everything," says Callin. "By the time you've thought about it, it's too late… You really have to be one with the car."And drivers need sheer guts. As Callin's rival and friend, 32-year-old Swiss driver Jndia Erbacher, jokingly tells the BBC - it takes "balls".Callin clinched her second successive European Top Fuel title in September at the Santa Pod drag strip near Northampton. It is the fourth year in a row that a female driver has won the title. Meanwhile in the US, the record-setting Brittany Force won the US championship - run by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) - in both 2017 and 2022.Drag racing is "highly unusual" among motorsports, says Fran Longstaff, chief innovation officer at More Than Equal, which supports and campaigns for women in motorsports.Seeing women competing and winning in the sport has become "normalised rather than treated as exceptional", she says, including with "sustained success" in Top Fuel.Research she co-led into why drag racing leads the way for equality in motorsport did not identify physical or biological factors, she says.Instead, she points to a "continuous stream of visible female role models", as well as the sport's "accessible grassroots structure, junior programmes, open pits and family-oriented, collaborative culture".In drag racing, points out Callin, women started winning major races "decades and decades ago".The best known is Shirley Muldowney, dubbed the "first lady" of drag racing. The first woman to gain a Top Fuel licence, Muldowney won the NHRA championship in 1977 and went on to become the first driver to win three titles, with further wins in 1980 and 1982.She had to battle to be allowed to compete at high levels, and faced hostility at times from other competitors and fans, but is now lauded for her perseverance. When the BBC spent time with Callin in the pits between races at Santa Pod, surrounded by roaring engines and the smell of burning rubber, she signed autographs for fans - young and old, male and female - as her team prepared her car."I never feel I've been underestimated or treated badly for being a woman - never," Callin says. This is in stark contrast to the experiences of women seeking to enter Formula 1. Young female drivers have spoken about being deliberately pushed off karting tracks by male competitors, and facing sexist comments in person or online.More Than Equal's research also highlights a close-knit, family-oriented, collaborative culture in drag racing.Like many top drag racers, Callin is from a racing family. She has been involved since childhood, following in the footsteps of her father and uncle, who both raced competitively.Similarly, Erbacher's father Urs was a three-time European Top Fuel champion. And Brittany Force is the daughter of John Force, who holds 16 NHRA drag racing titles.Female drivers have also shown that success is possible in Top Fuel in the years after having children.Callin took a break for more than a decade to raise her daughter and stepdaughters. It was when she returned, aged 35, that her career really began to flourish. Similarly, Finnish driver Anita Mäkelä has won the European championship four times – three of them after a six-year break focusing on her children and running her family's chicken farm. For Callin, racing is ingrained in family life. Her dad is still part of her team. Her husband, Keith Bartlett - sometimes referred to as the "godfather" of UK drag racing - runs Santa Pod Raceway. Two of their daughters were driving junior dragsters at 80mph before they were old enough to sit a standard driving test. The youngest, Jacqueline, is now 19 and racing in adult classes. The culture is collaborative, despite fierce competition - evident at last year's championship, when Erbacher offered Callin spare parts after her car was damaged."We hate each other at the starting line, but we love each other at the finish line," Erbacher says.Asked about safety, both Callin and Erbacher talk about having "respect" for the car and the risks.Over the years, strict procedures and regulations in Top Fuel have evolved to improve safety.Drivers wear fire-resistant suits and sit in highly protected cockpits. Even after dramatic accidents, drivers in many cases escape relatively unscathed. This includes Callin, who has had two major crashes, suffering a concussion and a bruised collar bone, but no lasting injuries. She says serious accidents are a "very small percentage". Even so, she is still not sure she would be comfortable if her daughter wanted to race in Top Fuel, with its extreme speeds.Erbacher says her father initially refused to let her race, but relented when she declared she would do it with or without his help. He now manages her team.More Than Equal also points out that the financial barriers to participating in drag racing are lower than for some other motorsports. It takes millions of pounds to reach Formula 1, requiring high levels of sponsorship. Elite drag racing is also expensive, but not on the same scale. At the lowest levels, accessible racing events called "track days" take place, where participants can turn up and drive their own ordinary cars.In the biggest Top Fuel championships, drivers race for themselves and earn points based on how they perform against their competitors. The European championship consists of four events - two in the UK, and one each in Germany and Sweden - in which each driver takes part in six races. Prize funds are limited, mostly serving as a contribution towards costs. The US championship is on a larger scale, with 20 events across the country. The NHRA has not published a breakdown of prize money, but according to drag racing website Competition Plus, there is $500,000 (£378,000) for the 2026 winner, and significant pots for winners of individual events throughout the season. The US, Europe and Australia have all seen female drag racing champions, but in other parts of the world, the sport is less well established, Top Fuel is rare and the picture is more varied. Individual women are breaking barriers across a range of different motorsports, and in some countries female drivers are carving out space in drag racing.Women have begun to make an impact in Brazil's popular drag racing scene, including Fabiola Dal Bo who has held a category record in recent years. A team in South Africa hosts all-female drag races, while the popular reality TV show The Fastest in Arabic has raised the profile of women racers in the Middle East.In India, 35-year-old Uvashri Kannadasan Balajeyanthi has clinched victories over male rivals in India's major drag racing series, Valley Run, with wins across three different categories in events from 2022 to 2024.Known as Octy Girl in reference to the modified Skoda Octavia she first raced in, she tells the BBC she has "mixed feelings" when her achievements are met with surprise: "Why do they have to get shocked? Anyone can drive, right?" But she adds "sometimes I feel proud… I'm breaking the barrier of being in a male-dominated sport".Back in Europe, however, Callin says being a woman on the drag strip is "super-normal".She describes winning the European championship two years running as a "massive achievement". And she is already looking towards her next goal: becoming the first person, male or female, to win the title three years in a row.-BBC

Adidas sues Australian label White Fox over four stripes design

Adidas sues Australian label White Fox over four stripes design

Adidas is suing Australian label White Fox for selling and advertising clothes with a four-striped design, arguing it is "deceptively similar" to the German brand's distinct logo. The sportswear giant said it had repeatedly asked White Fox to stop selling and promoting the clothes since March, but the Sydney-based company refused. The fast-fashion online retailer is popular with teenagers and young adults in Australia, the UK and the US, and has relied on billboards, bus advertising and influencers - often university-aged - to grow its profile. The Australian law firms representing Adidas and White Fox both declined to comment on the case, the first hearing due to begin on Friday. In Federal Court documents, Adidas states that its three-striped design has a "substantial and valuable reputation" in Australia, where it has been trademarked since 1957.The company says since at least March, White Fox has been selling and advertising clothes with four parallel stripes of equal width, which it claims is an infringement of Adidas's trademark.White Fox's designs are "substantially identical with or otherwise deceptively similar" to Adidas, the company claims. It also argues that White Fox's advertisements for its four-striped clothes and White Fox-branded socks feature people wearing "genuine" Adidas items. This might lead Australians to think Adidas is associated with White Fox and has approved of the design, the documents claim. The company says White Fox is "taking advantage" of Adidas's reputation, "drawing an association in the minds of consumers" of the two brands, or at least "sailing close to the wind".Adidas, which reported €24.8 billion (£21bn; $28bn) in revenue in 2025, is also seeking damages, saying White Fox must pay them the profit from the products plus interest and costs.Evidence provided by Adidas included side-by-side comparisons of its products with White Fox clothes which include sweatpants and lounge shorts, as well as images of billboards on buses and at bus stops. In one example, Adidas claimed that an online listing from June 2025 showed a pair of White Fox-branded socks being modelled by someone wearing pink Adidas shoes.A few days after the court proceedings were lodged last month, the Adidas logo on the shoes were digitally altered to remove one of the stripes, the documents alleged, and a week later, all three stripes were scrubbed from the image. In 2013, Adidas successfully sued Pacific Brands in Australia for selling shoes with four stripes.White Fox was launched in 2013 by Georgia and Daniel Contos and is privately-owned by the Greek-Australian couple and Daniel's mother Melina Maceri. It has a growing presence in the US and expanded into the UK market in 2024.In the 12 months to June 2025, the company generated AU$542m (£286m; $377m) in revenue, a four-fold jump from its 2022 figure of $121m, according to the Australian Financial Review.-BBC

AI chip boom fuels Samsung’s profit surge

AI chip boom fuels Samsung’s profit surge

Samsung Electronics says it expects a nine-fold surge in its quarterly profits compared with a year earlier, driven by surging demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. The tech giant estimates that its operating profit for the three months to the end of September will jump to 107.4tn won (£61bn; $80bn), its fourth quarter in a row of record earnings.Samsung is one of the world's largest memory chip makers alongside local rival SK Hynix and Micron in the US, which produce chips crucial for AI firms like Nvidia.Samsung, which makes the Galaxy Fold and S26 smartphones, is also expected to get a boost from its latest folding devices that were launched in August. The firm's full third-quarter earnings will be published at the end of October. Some of South Korea's biggest companies release previews of their earnings to advise investors ahead of more detailed reports. These forecasts are treated with much more credibility than estimates by external analysts as they are backed by internal company data. There has been huge global demand for computer chips that power AI development, helping to lift the earnings and shares of manufacturers linked to the technology. The surge in demand in recent years has resulted in a shortage of semiconductors globally, pushing up sales for firms like Samsung, with its stock market valuation crossing $1tn (£757bn) earlier this year.Investment in the industry has surged, with US tech giants including Google, Amazon and Meta pledging to pour more than $650bn into AI projects this year.In June, South Korea unveiled plans for at least $880bn in projects led by Samsung and SK Hynix to build out the country's chip manufacturing capabilities in the coming years.Rival Asian firms in Japan, China and Taiwan are also investing heavily in chip plants as demand for AI soars.A chip shortage driven by surging demand has led firms including Samsung to raise prices, making products such as smartphones and computers more expensive.-BBC

Oil dips as Trump comments ease market concerns

Oil dips as Trump comments ease market concerns

Oil prices fell on Friday as Middle East supply concerns eased somewhat after US President Donald Trump said the country will not attack Iran before US elections next month amid productive talks to end their ‌war that has disrupted the market.Brent crude futures fell 72 cents, or 0.7%, to $103.53 a barrel by 0220 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 52 cents, or 0.6%, to $90.97.Still, Brent prices are set for weekly gains after settling 4% higher on Thursday because of an increase in attacks on shipping carrying crude out of the Middle East earlier this week. WTI is set for a slight weekly decline even amid supply disruptions due to a hurricane approaching the Gulf of Mexico coast in the US, the world's biggest oil producer. On Thursday, Trump said Washington was having "productive discussions" with Iran and said no attack was planned before the November 3 midterm congressional elections after media reports he was considering an attack before then.Iran's Tasnim news agency reported the same day that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi ‌said Tehran is reviewing the US response to its proposal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. The US is still pressuring Iran economically to try to end the war, now in its eighth month. The US imposed fresh sanctions on Thursday targeting individuals, networks and 17 vessels for transporting Iranian crude, oil products and petrochemicals.Prices have been volatile this week as threats to oil shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, which carried shipments equal to about 20% of global oil and fuel before the war, have increased in October. The oil market is also contending with Hurricane Isaias in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the storm, producers there have shut in about 1.3 million barrels per day, or 62.9%, of current oil production as of Thursday, according to the US Marine Minerals Administration.-Reuters

Oil jumps 5% as Iran steps up attacks on Hormuz tankers

Brent crude swung back above $105 per barrel today as reports flow in about increasingly frequent Iranian attacks on tankers in Hormuz while U.S. Gulf Coast operators began shutting in production and prepping refineries ahead of an approaching storm. At the time of writing, Brent crude was trading at $105.02 per barrel, up by over 4.81% from Wednesday’s close. While West Texas Intermediate was changing hands for $92.69 per barrel, up by 5% from Wednesday.Earlier this week, oil moved lower on the latest update from the International Energy Agency, which said it would soon decide on how exactly to start releasing those 100 million barrels in crude and fuels the G7 agreed on last week. Some observers noted this is not a new release, however, but a part of a plan announced in March for the release of some 400 million barrels from inventory to cushion the war blow on fuel prices. In other words, that release has been pretty much priced in already, so the news about Iran stepping up attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz served to push prices higher. According to new data from a U.S. Navy-led information outlet, there were a dozen attacks between September 28 and October 2 alone, Reuters reported earlier today.Because of these attacks, tanker traffic in the critical waterway has once again dropped sharply, with flows this Tuesday at the lowest since late July, according to Kpler. However, producers are running out of options.“In the past, such attacks have resulted in a reduction in shipments from the Persian Gulf. This time around, producers appear to be willing ‌to take the risk of their vessels being damaged, as there is no alternative way to get their oil to international markets,” ANZ analyst Daniel Hynes said as quoted by Reuters today.-OilPrice.com

Selyn Foundation and World Vision to promote menstrual health in 50 schools

Selyn Foundation partnered with World Vision Lanka to promote Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHM) among schoolchildren through World Vision Lanka’s SHIKSHA/KALVI initiative. The partnership was formally launched at an event held at the World Vision Lanka premises recently. The collaboration will support students of 50 under-resourced schools across 25 districts of Sri Lanka. The partnership will focus on providing education covering the fundamentals of menstrual health, addressing myths and stigma, menstrual tracking, body literacy, hygiene management, nutrition, self-care, wellbeing, and menstrual pain management.Speaking at the event, World Vision Lanka National Director Dr. Dhannan Senathirajah highlighted the importance of ensuring that children can experience their school years with dignity and confidence. He said, “A child spends some of the most formative years of their school life—learning, growing, discovering their potential, and preparing for the future. A school, therefore, should be more than a place to study. It should be a safe and supportive environment where every child can learn with dignity and thrive.”He further highlighted the need to address the barriers that can prevent girls from fully participating in school life during menstruation. “UNICEF Sri Lanka highlights poor Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities, menstrual stigma and limited awareness as factors that can contribute to absenteeism among girls.”Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management is one of the key areas addressed through the SHIKSHA/KALVI campaign, alongside Digital Education, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), infrastructure development, provision of school aesthetics and sports equipment, inclusion and protection programmes, nutrition awareness, and waste segregation systems. The menstrual hygiene management sessions to be launched by Selyne Foundation in partnership with the SHIKSHA/KALVI campaign are designed to be interactive and are conducted by Selyne’s accredited medical professionals.Lawyer and Director of Selyne Foundation, Selyna Pieris said: “Our partnership with World Vision has always been rooted in a shared belief that communities thrive when there is access to education and opportunity. The SHIKSHA/KALVI campaign felt like a natural next chapter in that relationship; it gave us a chance to build the trust and groundwork we have already established together, and to extend that impact even further into the communities.

Michael Kearns, Actor, Activist and ‘Jerker’ Director, Dies at 76

Michael Kearns, an actor who appeared in Body Double, Cheers and Beverly Hills, 90210 and directed the world premiere of Robert Chesley’s Jerker, a play about two gay men that generated controversy in 1986, has died. He was 76.Kearns died Monday, his friend Karen Ocamb reported. The cause of death was not immediately available.Kearns came out as gay in the mid-1970s during an era of extreme homophobia, then went on NBC in 1991 to announce that he was HIV positive a week after Midnight Express actor Brad Davis died of AIDS — but had kept his health issues a secret so he could keep working.“I’m doing this for all people with HIV,” he told Ocamb back then. “HIV is nothing to be ashamed of. For me to remain silent indicates shame or fear on some level.”Kearns was set to appear on Sunday (National Coming Out Day) at the Celebration Theatre in Los Angeles to reprise selections from Jerker alongside friend and colleague Joe Gill.A post on the theater’s Facebook page said, “We share the community’s sorrow in this loss and celebrate the incredible impact he has had on our mission and the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ Rights movements. Thank you, Michael, for all you gave this world.”Debuting during the initial AIDS crisis, Jerker centers on two gay men who fall in love over a phone-sex line. When excerpts from the Celebration Theatre play were broadcast on local radio station KPFK-FM, an evangelical minister heard it and complained to the FCC, which warned KPFK that it could lose its license for broadcasting “indecent” material.“I was … infuriated and felt that clearly, if this had been a man and a woman having this conversation, having this theatricalized conversation over the radio, the issues would not have been the same,” Kearns told the Los Angeles Times in 1996.“A lot of people, myself included, look on that as just the beginnings of what continues to rage on, which is censorship of queer work.”Born in St. Louis on Jan. 8, 1950, Kearns attended the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago and two years after graduation appeared on Broadway in 1974 in Tubstrip, a comedy set in a steam bath. He also made his onscreen debut that year on an episode of The Waltons.Kearns also showed up on TV on The Fall Guy, Murder, She Wrote, And the Band Played On, Days of Our Lives, Making of a Male Model and Knots Landing and in such films as The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) and Brian De Palma’s Body Double (1984).His theater credits included The Dirtiest Show in Town, Intimacies and More Intimacies — he portrayed culturally diverse people with HIV/AIDS in those — The Truth Is Bad Enough, Attachments and Who’s Afraid of Edward Albee?Kearns also served as the artistic director at the Celebration Theatre from 1986-87 and at QueerWise, a spoken word collective that he founded in 2011; co-founded Artists Confronting AIDS in the ’80s; and wrote several books about acting.Survivors include his adopted daughter, Katherine.-The Hollywood Reporter

Former Bachelor Australia star Sam Wood denied bail over domestic violence charges

Former Bachelor Australia star Sam Wood denied bail over domestic violence charges

Former Bachelor Australia star and fitness coach Sam Wood will remain in jail after he was denied bail over alleged domestic violence offences.Wood was arrested on Saturday at a beachfront property on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, and later charged with domestic violence assault and strangulation. His lawyer told the court on Thursday Wood may defend himself by arguing he acted in self defence during a family fight, but stressed he denies the strangulation charge. The 46-year-old rose to fame in the 2015 season of the reality TV show and later became the public face of a popular online home fitness and nutrition brand, 28 by Sam Wood - from which he was dumped after his arrest.Wood - who lives in Melbourne but was on holiday in Noosa - appeared via videolink at Maroochydore Magistrates Court where he applied for bail after five nights in custody.Police prosecutors told the court the alleged victim had provided a video statement in which she said she had been choked, couldn't breathe, and had her head banged against the floor."She thought she was going to die," Sergeant Jeanette Grigoris said. They also tendered photos of the alleged victim's injuries, as well as a recording of a call to emergency services in which a witness says the woman was choked. The complainant supports the criminal charges, Grigoris added.Wood's lawyer Mathew Cuskelly had argued that there was a lack of evidence to support the strangulation charge, which "seems unusual" given the "nature" and "gravity" of the allegation. He also said his client had been involved in an argument, in which the complainant had been "hostile" when he pushed her - circumstances which could entitle him to a self-defence claim.Cuskelly said Wood suffers from severe depression, and argued he should be bailed so that he can access mental health support and salvage his professional reputation "which has taken a hell of a beating".But Grigoris argued there was a risk Wood would interfere with witnesses or reoffend, or fail to return to Queensland to face court. On Monday, a statement "from the Wood family" was released on both he and his wife's social media."This is a difficult time for all of us, we are working through this as a family and thoroughly co-operating with the authorities," the post said.DBG Health, which bought Wood's fitness brand for millions of dollars in 2022, initially said Wood had been placed on "indefinite leave" but later announced it had cut its commercial arrangements with him "effective immediately"."DGB Health does not tolerate domestic violence in any form, and our thoughts are with people impacted by it," the company said.Since the charges, a number of fitness influencers and corporate sponsors have also cut ties with Wood including fitness trainer Tiffiny Hall and Married At First Sight star Jules Robinson.Wood came to national prominence during the 2015 season of The Bachelor Australia where he met contestant Snezana Markoski. They married in 2018 and have four daughters, including one from his wife's former relationship.Wood is next due in court on 23 November.-BBC

Can Microdramas save Hollywood? Why the new vertical boom isn’t Quibi 2.0

Can Microdramas save Hollywood? Why the new vertical boom isn’t Quibi 2.0

Kenan Thompson’s next project leans deep into camp. He’s set to star as a man who’s kidnapped at a Toys R Us and locked in the store’s basement. When he realizes his handcuffs are actually made of fuzz, he escapes and returns home. Back to safety, he discovers that his wife has already moved on and hooked up with his twin brother, also played by the comedian.“Saturday Night Live” sketch? Weird one-and-done Netflix comedy? Nope. Thompson’s series, called “MisTaken,” is part of 100 Zeros, a new venture launched by Google and Range Media Partners to produce vertical microdramas.“It’s a soapy story that he probably wouldn’t be able to pitch as a television show,” says Range partner Rachel Douglas. Thompson, along with director McG and “The Bachelor” creator Mike Fleiss, is one of the more high-profile names looking to play in the fast-growing microdrama space, where series consist of 60 or so episodes that barely last a minute each and feature minimal production values, mostly unknown stars and budgets that average $250,000. Cliff-hangers, story arcs and emotional beats are required every few seconds to keep users engaged.“You see how people are watching their content, right? Everyone is on their phone,” Douglas says of the new twist on short-form content. “I was first surprised by how much talent wanted to play and make stuff. Before, they go through the traditional process and nothing gets made; they’re at the mercy of studios and notes and development. With this model, we’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re not going to make any money up front, but you can go make the thing that you’ve been really passionate about.’”The endgame could be a microdrama hit or IP that turns into a franchise — which then could be used as the proof of concept to pitch a long-form TV series or film. Some creators and stars see this as a steppingstone to entering the mainstream, but inside the growing microdrama industry, the goal is simply to make habit-forming content for viewers on their phones. Is there ultimately any money to be made in the microdrama space? Can this expanding industry give a struggling Hollywood workforce a shot in the arm? Or is this Quibi all over again?Founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, Quibi spent more than $1 billion on high-end short-form projects from A-list producers like Guillermo del Toro, Antoine Fuqua and Sam Raimi. But given the amount of free fare available on YouTube and TikTok, consumers weren’t looking to pay hefty subscription fees to watch a handful of premium shorts. Also, Quibi didn’t own its programming. And a worldwide pandemic didn’t help the timing. Launched in April 2020, Quibi shut down within six months, selling its library to Roku for a piddling $100 million. Now, Hollywood is approaching the microdrama space with more reasonable investments and expectations. And this time, there’s plenty of proof that it might work. After all, the microdrama boom that took off earlier this decade in China — where tech platforms were focused on churning out addictive serialized shorts on the cheap — is already here.“These were gaming companies and tech companies who created them based on a totally different model that’s all about feeding dopamine releases,” says Vertical Romance co-founder and producer Enzo Semmens. Semmens, who wrote the primer “Cliffwriting: The Microdrama Blueprint Hollywood Hates,” adds, “An episode is just a game of ‘Candy Crush.’ At the end of it, you have your cliff-hanger, and you want to play to get to the next level.”As the Chinese microdramas made their way west, U.S. platforms like DramaBox and ReelShort led the charge, spending millions of dollars to market the shorts to users and quickly building up a marketplace. With their low budgets and often cheesy storylines, microdramas were seen as a new take on an old genre — the TV soap opera — with one major difference. “They’re soap operas for the ADHD generation, because you’re taking out all the filler,” says former Showtime and ABC exec Jana Winograde, now the co-founder of microdrama studio and platform aTwist.According to estimates by consulting firm Owl & Co., revenue generated by vertical microdramas outside China will hit $4 billion this year, up 33% from $3 billion in 2025. That rapid growth has provided a glimmer of hope in Hollywood, where optimism has been in short supply. Creatives are still recovering from the strike-related work stoppages in 2023, along with a decline in volume as networks, streamers and studios pare back their output and production continues to flee to more economical settings.“It’s just moving so fast,” says Semmens. “If you work in Hollywood behind the camera, you’ve had the opportunity to work on a vertical. Someone has likely asked you over the past two or three years. The pay rates are a third to a quarter of what a traditional regular day would be, and the content isn’t stuff to necessarily be proud of. On the flip side, it’s like going to the gym: You have to keep working those muscles to stay fit. If this is a style of storytelling that’s going to stick around, you sure as hell should know how a cliff-hanger break works in a vertical. Because we’re going to be seeing a lot more of them.”Autumn Federici, whose vertical storytelling app Microhouse Films (co-founded with actor Taye Diggs) has partnered with Lifetime on the project “Tides of Temptation,” believes the new genre has given people in the industry “a lot of hope.”“It might not look the way that we’re used to in Hollywood and the way that I’ve made all of the films that I’ve made,” she says, “but I’m excited to continue to learn how the storytelling evolves.”Besides Lifetime, other legacy outlets entering the microdrama universe are Fox, which has an equity stake in the Ukrainian app startup Holywater, and Bravo, which is creating unscripted verticals with some of its stars. And they’ve already taken notice at Sunset Studios’ Las Palmas lot, where several camera-ready sets, including a courtroom, an apartment, a bar/restaurant, a hospital and an office have been built with verticals in mind.“We’d seen the growing number of productions in the vertical-microdrama space that were happening in Los Angeles,” says Sunset Studios sales senior VP Sean Griffin. “We see this as a growth market, and we’re very happy with the response so far. We’ve only been open for about six weeks, but we’re very optimistic and thrilled that this is bringing jobs back. Do I think that this is going to replace all of the production losses that we’ve seen in Los Angeles? That’s a much bigger question than I myself can answer.”Among the productions that have already shot on the Sunset Las Palmas vertical stages are microseries from aTwist, from Hollywood vets Winograde, chief content officer Susan Rovner and Lloyd Braun.Winograde says she didn’t even know about microdramas until last year. But suddenly she started hearing about them everywhere. “The pace of adoption has been incredible,” she says. The key was not just to be a producer of microdramas, but also to own the means of distribution. “While there may be more of a business right now producing microdramas than doing some other things in the entertainment business, it’s not a huge-margin business,” Winograde says. “It’s lower-cost programming. So to us, at least, what makes sense is to be on both sides of the coin — to be creating durable IP and owning it, but also to be monetizing it through our own means.”That includes keeping things on a tight budget (most series are written in-house and feature stars that only microdrama fans would recognize) and expanding the scope. Besides romance — easily the most common genre in the space — “we’re doing horror, we’re doing a musical, we’re doing thrillers, we’re doing a lot of different things,” Rovner says. “The thing that we’re finding, regardless of genre, is structure. The need to keep people engaged, the need to feel that pace, the need to really hook people in.”Expanding genres makes sense, as user demographics are quickly changing. Older women made up the initial audience for microdramas (anecdotally, hospital workers were among the early adopters). But audiences are getting younger, and a recent study by Holywater shows that males now make up as much as 30% of viewers, up from less than 2% just two years ago.Whereas most of the early microdrama platforms spent more on marketing and audience acquisition than on the content, Winograde and Rovner say they hope to offer up a higher-quality product that keeps users coming back to their app.“Obviously, costs are going up now that Hollywood’s stepping up,” says Lion Forge president/chief content officer Stephanie Sperber. That gives some hope to Tina Randolph Contogenis, the founder of Eris Talent Agency, which has devoted a lot of its attention in recent years to the microdrama space. Business was good until recently, Contogenis says, but opportunities then started to decrease due to the widespread adoption of AI-generated stars and stories by the original microdrama platforms, particularly from China. Perhaps the arrival of Hollywood’s deep pockets, and their promise not to be so AI-focused, will counteract that.“Things have really slowed down, to the point that people are panicking,” she says of her acting clients, who are getting fewer auditions than even a few months ago. “A lot of the [microdrama] companies are not doing as many live action, and they’re doing a lot more with AI.”For actress Janine Czajka, who has appeared in more than 18 verticals over the past year, the drop in microdrama work has been stark. “The goal is to keep doing as many of these as possible to keep fighting for live action with real humans.” But, on the bright side, she adds, “Yes, there are less projects out there for us as live actors, but the quality of them are getting so much better because we know that we have something to prove.”Says Semmens: “There was a very recent point where 75% of all permits from FilmLA were for verticals. But that was before the AI boom in the past few months, with so many being produced through generative AI.”Among the tech companies that pioneered verticals, there’s less of an ethical or qualitative dilemma about using AI — they don’t really care if their casts are AI-generated. But the Hollywood companies getting into the arena are much clearer about not using AI for acting or writing talent. (Special effects and production work is another thing.)But as they bolster storytelling and acting by bringing in more seasoned creatives, even veterans in the space are wondering how economically viable the business of microdramas ultimately will be. “We are figuring it out ourselves too,” says Elaine Frontain Bryant, executive VP and head of programming at Lifetime, A&E and LMN.The future will likely include more input and investment from brands, many of which have been eager to sink money into the business. Just as companies like Procter & Gamble helped launch soap operas in the early days of television, brands are looking to find ways to have more control over creative and new avenues to showcase their products beyond the usual 30-second ad.“This is a way to do content and create organic storytelling around brands that is less expensive, lower lift and a really viable way of telling stories,” Winograde says. Adds Douglas, “When we start talking to brands about how we can craft this microdrama together — ‘You can show up in a way that you’ve never showed up before, and you actually have a little bit more control’ — that’s when they light up.”The real test will come as some of the new Hollywood entrants to the vertical space really get going with their more polished releases. That could determine whether the microdrama might be here to stay, occupying a new lane in an industry starved for jobs.“I mean, we really are employing people in L.A.,” Rovner says. “Obviously, the budgets are lower. It’s quicker. You’re not on a series that’s going to go for 10 months or something. These shoots are about eight days, so it’s shorter work. I don’t think it replaces anything — it doesn’t replace what a Netflix show is. But I do think it’s going to get more people working and offer more opportunities.”-Variety

Users can refine the rules with prompts, customize characters and tweak the environment until it’s what they envision. “Playground” is browser-based, games are playable across phones and laptops.Once a game is ready, users have the option to keep their game private, generate a shareable link to send to friends and family or publish it to share with the broader “Playground” community. Since “Playground” supports multiplayer gameplay, gamers can also see in-game leaderboards and follow other creators to see their latest creations. The upcoming “Unity Spark Integration: Playground” will soon offer integration with UnitySpark so creators who want to expand their concepts can take advantage of Unity Spark’s robust, professional-level mechanics, 3-D capabilities and the flexibility of the Unity runtime.-Vareity
